Ehkki puukide peamine pesitsuskoht on pigem pikas heinas, pole sugugi liigne ettevaatus kaitsta end puugi eest ka aiamaal ja koduõues. On mõned lihtsad, kuid tõhusad looduslikud vahendid, mis aitavad puugid eemale hoida.

- Kasvata taimi, mille lõhn peletab mitmedki putukad eemale: Lavendel, sidrunhein, piparmünt ja küüslauk mõjuvad ühtmoodi eemaletõukavalt nii puukidele kui saastele ning teistelegi. Eriti nutikas on neid taimi külvata krundi piirile.

- Loodusesse minnes määri nahale looduslikku putukatõrjevahendit: 2 supilusikatäie vee või õli sisse tuleks segada kuni 10 tilka eeterlikku õli. Putukaid peletavatest õlidest sobivad selleks eelkõige sidrunheinaõli, eukalüptiõli, rosmariiniõli, lavendliõli, sidruneukalüptiõli, nelgiõli. See vahend peaks putukad sinust eemal hoidma kuni kolm tundi.

- Koduloomadel ära isetehtud sääsetõrjevahendit kasuta, see rikub nende haistmismeelt. Kassidele-koertele on mõeldud spetsiaalsed kirbu- ja puugirihmad, ka on neid võimalik vaktsineerida spetsiaalsete tilkade abil.
