Kokkupuude kahel esimesel raseduskuul liiklusest tuleneva õhusaastega suurendab oluliselt sünnidefektide riski. Nii näitasid Ameerika teadlased ajakirjas The American Journal of Epidemiology ilmunud töös.

Uurijad võtsid arvesse nii suitsetamise, ema vanuse kui ka teised võimalikud muutujad ning võrdlesid 849 sünnidefektiga vastsündinut 853 terve beebiga.
Need lapseootel emad, kes elasid piirkondades, kus õhu süsinikoksiidi või lämmastikoksiidi kontsentratsioonid olid kõrgeimad, omasid peaaegu kahekordset tõenäosust neuraaltoru defektide esinemiseks lapsel. Tegemist on väga tõsiste närvisüsteemi kahjustustega.
