Inimesed ei käitu alati ratsionaalselt. Seetõttu on säästmine paljudele vastumeelne tegevus, isegi siis, kui rahaliselt on võimalik veidi kõrvale panna ja mõistetakse varuraha vajalikkust.

Põhjus on lihtne: inimene tahab kohe rahuolu tunda ehk tarbida, mitte rahuolutunnet edasi lükata. Seda ei olda sageli nõus tegema isegi mitte tulevase kasu nimel. Näiteks üks USA-s tehtud uuring näitas, et kui inimesel on valida, kas saada kohe täna kätte 10 dollarit või 15 dollarit järgmisel nädalal, siis eelistatakse esimest varianti.

Siiski paljud inimesed säästavad ja teevad seda väga erinevatel eesmärkidel: võimalike raskete aegade üleelamiseks, konkreetse asja jaoks (reis, kodulaenu sissemakse, auto vmt), elusündmusi silmas pidades – näiteks lapsele täiskasvanuks saamiseks stardirahaks või enda pensionieaks. Mida arvavad eestlased säästmisest?

Eestis on praegu üsna levinud arusaam, et säästa pole mõtet, sest esiteks sööb inflatsioon säästud ära. Teiseks toovad tänased 35-40 aastased pikaajalise säästmise vajalikkuse vastulausena näite sellest, kuidas nende vanemad kogusid neile elukindlustuse kaudu raha, et laps saaks 18-aastaseks saades 1000 rubla. Kuna riigikord vahetus, kahanes summa paraku kümnekordselt.

Poliitiliste riskide ning majanduskriiside eest pole üksikisik kunagi kaitstud, kuid väikegi summa varuraha mustadeks päevadeks peaks igaühel siiski olemas olema. Üldiselt soovitatakse, et kõrvale pandud võiks olla 3–6 kuu kulutusteks vajaminev raha, et mõnda aega tulla toime olukorras, kus sissetulek kas oluliselt väheneb või kaob hoopis.

Paraku elavad paljud inimesed palgapäevast palgapäevani ning sääste on kas vähe või pole üldse. Poolteist aastat tagasi viis Faktum & Ariko tuhande eestimaalase seas läbi uuringu "Finantsalane kirjaoskus Eesti elanike seas". Tulemustest selgus, et kui inimene peaks kaotama oma peamise sissetulekuallika, oli 17 protsendil küsitletutest võimalik ilma lisarahata oma eluaset säilitada alla ühe kuu. 1–3 kuud suudaks ilma lisarahata eluaset säilitada 23% vastanuist.

Kolm lihtsat nippi säästmiseks

1. Selleks, et välja selgitada, kui palju sa üldse iga kuu kõrvale suudaksid panna, koosta pere-eelarve. See annab mustvalgel pildi, kui palju teenid, kui palju kulutad ja millele kulutad. Kulusid analüüsides leiad üles ka kohad, mille arvelt on võimalik säästa.

2. Maksa kõigepealt iseendale.
